Car seats were created to protect children from accidents by providing a restraint system designed specifically for the needs of babies and small children. Unfortunately, these seats frequently do not protect children because of their design defects.

For starters, there are four different types of car seats which have specific uses. The first is an infant seat. Infant seats are designed for babies less than 20 pounds and who are less than a year old. The next type of seat is the convertible seat. Convertible seats start out as a backwards facing infant seat but can be converted to the forward-facing position. It can be used by children until they weight 40 pounds and are 43 inches tall. Toddler seats are for children over 1 year who weigh between 20 and 40 pounds. The final type of car seat is a booster seat. Booster seats are for children who have outgrown the toddler seat and provide protection for children up to roughly 70 pounds.

From March of 1998 to May of 2001, four major manufacturers announced five recalls of car seats which have affected nearly 10 million seats. Despite these massive recalls, many other car seats for infants are thought to have safety issues, even though they have not been recalled.

The most common problems with car seats involve defective handles. These handles release unexpectedly, have weak construction, and unexpected rotation. These problems frequently result in injuries to children during accidents.
