The Dangers of Cell Phones and Driving
Life without cell phones is a hard thing for many people to even imagine. Since the invention of the cell phone, we have come to rely on being able to reach anyone at anytime over the phone. Cellular phones have allowed us to catch up with friends, do business, and communicate with whomever we need to, no matter where we may be. While these gadgets have undoubtedly made our lives more efficient, they have also caused a great deal of controversy as people seem unable to use cell phones safely while operating a motor vehicle.
It may sound a little ridiculous to think that a little cell phone could be very dangerous, however, the number of automobile collisions caused by a person who was talking on a phone while driving continues to increase. Studies have shown that the simple act of being involved in a conversation while driving can put the driver and all other cars nearby at serious risk of collision. These reports show that people talking on the phone while driving have similar reaction times as drunk drivers. Although many people may think that they are able to multitask and carry on a conversation while driving, these studies show that the action may be more dangerous than anyone had thought
Hands-free devices quickly hit the market after the cell phone safety issue was raised. These devices did not solve the problem, however, since it was the act of being involved with the conversation that caused people to get in accidents – not the act of holding the cell phone.
