Faulty Seat Belts
Americans use their seatbelts in record numbers, thanks to the successful campaigns urging people to “buckle up”. Most of us trust our seat belts to restrain us and to protect us from injury. In short, we expect our seatbelts to work. When they don’t work, injuries, that are at a minimum serious and maximum fatal, occur.
A typical accident can be seen as having two collisions. The first collision is when a car hits another vehicle or a fixed object. The second collision involves the occupant of the vehicle hitting something on the interior of the car or is ejected and hits the ground. The seatbelts we all wear are designed to prevent the second collision or to minimize the second collision’s injury-producing potential. The seatbelts work when a snug-fitting law and shoulder belt ties the occupant to the passenger compartment and allows him or her to ride “down” the crash. This minimizes or eliminates the contact with the vehicle’s interior (such as the windshield, steering wheel, or the roof) which can cause death or serious injury.
Injury to a belted occupant is commonly due to crash forces and inescapable violence that is involved in car wrecks. Seatbelts simply do not make us immune from injury in a car crash; however, in many cases, the injuries sustained would not have happened if the seatbelts functioned properly. Seatbelts fail to restrain occupants, and therefore fail to prevent injury, due both to poor design and to faulty manufacturing.
