No Zones

Eighteen wheeler trucks can be very dangerous to drive around. However, if you are ever going to drive on a highway, it is probably unlikely that you will avoid it. Because of this, you should know how to best handle yourself when you are around them.

Eighteen wheelers have massive blind spots. These stretch out behind the trailer, in front of the truck, and to both sides. There is incredibly little visibility when you are driving a large truck. Because of this, truckers cannot see any vehicles that are in these blind spots, also called no zones. If you drive in the blind spot of a truck, you are putting yourself in danger.

There are certain things you can do, however, to minimize this danger. If you are passing a truck, pass only on the left. The blind spot on this side is slightly smaller than that on the right. This will make it somewhat easier for you to be seen by the trucker. Also, do not stay in the truck’s blind spot for longer than you have to. Even if the trucker sees you enter the blind spot, he or she may not remember that you are there.

A basic rule of thumb is that if you cannot see the trucker, he or she cannot see you. Stay back if you are following the truck, stay far ahead if you are in front of the truck. Also, do not stay on the side of the truck for too long.
