What is Blast Lung?

No one expects to be involved in an explosion. These accidents are thought to be rare events reserved for battle fields and movie sets; however, explosions occur at gas stations, after auto accidents, or as a result of a multitude of other everyday circumstances. Sadly, explosion accidents can happen to anyone and almost always result in devastating injury. One of the most demanding and painful injuries caused by explosions is a condition known as blast lung.

Blast lung is a serious condition suffered after catastrophic explosions. Namely, blast lung occurs when the body is impacted by high-order explosives (HE), as opposed to less intense low-order explosives (LE). HE creates a highly pressurized shock wave that impacts the body’s surface and disrupts the lung’s physiology and function. Blast lung is prominent in initial explosion survivors, making it imperative that bodily scans are conducted immediately for anyone involved in an explosion.

Symptoms of Blast Lung

The easiest way to know if you are suffering from blast lung is to have an X-ray or chest radiography conducted; blast lung imprints a characteristic “butterfly” pattern on the chest. Other symptoms common in explosion survivors include:

  • Coughing and chest pain
  • Respiratory difficulty and wheezing
  • Hemorrhages

Frighteningly, signs of abdominal and lung injuries following an explosion may be initially silent and have a delayed reaction. These injuries are serious and require long-term intensive care. While an explosion is extremely traumatic to go through, you are not helpless in obtaining the financial restitution that will allow you ongoing support for your injuries.
