Half a billion eggs recalled across the country

Posted on Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 at 4:20 am

The Food and Drug Administration's egg recall has expanded to 550 million eggs.  The initial recall only included 228 million eggs from three Wright County egg farms in Iowa.  However, the recall expanded after epidemiologic investigators found that the two other Wright County farms and Hillandale Farms also contained salmonella bacteria.

The recalled eggs were distributed to stores on May 16th.  Since May, there have been 1,200 reported cases of salmonella food poisoning in connection with the recalled eggs.  The majority of cases of food poisoning are clustered in Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Nevada, North Carolina, Texas, and Wisconsin.

USDA recalls one million pounds of ground beef

Posted on Tuesday, August 10th, 2010 at 3:42 am

The Valley Meat Company and the USDA have declared a recall of one million pounds of ground beef produced by the California-based meat processor.  The two announced the recall after several reported cases of E. coli bacteria found in the beef.

The recalled meat products are mostly frozen ground beef patties made between October 2009 and January 2010.  Because the products are frozen it is very likely that some grocery stores and consumers could still have the product in their freezers.

So far, there have been seven cases of E. coli poisoning from the Valley Meat Company product.  The USDA will investigate what caused the bacteria.
