DOT releases report on traffic fatalities

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 187,796 fatal car accidents occurred in the United States between 2004 and 2008.  The Department of Transportation recently released a report of statistics on car accident fatalities in the country in the four year period.

The report lists the most common causes of fatal car accidents as speeding, traffic, traffic controls, road conditions and weather.  Other causes included drunk driving and distracted driving.

Statistics stated in the report included that 94 percent of the car accidents involved a single fatality.  In addition, 6 percent of fatalities occurred in multi-vehicle accidents, 35 percent occurred in two-car accidents and 58 percent occurred in single-vehicle accidents.
