Study finds treatment mistakes in 1 in 7 Medicare patients

Posted under Uncategorized

A recently released study completed by the Department of Health & Human Services found that 1 in every 7 hospitalized Medicare patients is the victim of a treatment error.  The report cites three main causes of treatment mistakes among Medicare patients: urinary tract infections from catheters, excessive post-surgical bleeding and incorrect medications.

CEO and President of the American Hospital Association Rich Umbdenstock stated, "Hospitals are already engaged in important projects designed to improve patient care in many of the areas mentioned in the report.  We are committed to taking additional needed steps to improve patient care".  The AHA represents 5,000 hospitals across the country.

Researchers involved in the report estimate that 180,000 deaths a year, or 15,000 a month, occur as a result of treatment mistakes among Medicare patients.
