Motorcycle helmets reduce risk of spinal injury

Posted under Uncategorized

According to a recent study published in the Journal of American College of Surgeons, wearing a motorcycle helmet reduces one's risk of suffering a spinal injury in the case of an accident or collision.  Some previous studies had attempted to show that helmets increased torque on a motorcyclist's neck, but with current designs in helmets, researcheres believe this to not be true.

The study analyzed data from more than 40,000 motorcycle accidents occurring between 2002 and 2006.  Data showed that motorcyclists wearing a helmet were 22 percent less likely to suffer a spinal injury in a motorcycle accident than bikers who did not wear a helmet.  Researchers were also able to conclude that wearing a helmet reduced the risk of brain injury and death.
