Hospitals see rise in dog bite patients

Posted under Uncategorized

In 16 years, hospitals across the country have seen dramatic increases in the number of patients coming in for treatment of dog bites.  According to the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, about 9,500 people were treated at hospitals in the United States in 2008.  This is an increase of 4,400 from the 5,100 dog bite patients in 1993.

On average, medical bills for a patient that has gone to the hospital for treatment of a dog bite will amount to $18,200.  This is about 50 percent higher than other injury-related hospital bills.  The most common problem with dog bites is skin and tissue infection.  Also, the most common treatments include removal of dead skin tissue, skin grafts and sutures.
