CNN International recently reported on the frequency of wrong-side surgical errors. In a 2006 study of surgical errors in the United States, researchers found that every year there are around 2,700 surgical errors involving a surgeon performing the operation on the wrong body party. This number also includes instances where a procedure is performed on the wrong patient.
CEO of the safety advocacy group, National Quality Forum, Kenneth Kizer notes, "People underestimate how complex the system is and the number of ways that errors can happen. There are dozens of doctors that will be involved in a case that goes to an operating room. Every time someone new sees a patient, there's the potential that they'll miss something or get a detail wrong."
