The Center for Diease Control and Prevention, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and a melon farm in Colorado are warning consumers that cantaloupes sold under the Rocky Ford brand have been linked to an outbreatk in listeriosis.
Listeriosis is caused by the bacterium, listeria, and is most likely to affect newborns, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with compromised or weakened immune systems. People with listeriosis can experience digestive system problems, fever, muscle pain, and convulsions. In some instances, literiosis can be fatal.
So far, 35 people have reported becoming ill from the recalled cantaloupes. In addition, 4 deaths have been linked to listeria from the cantaloupes.
