This week, a gastric bypass patient and his family were awarded $178 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit filed against a hospital and doctor in Florida.

According to the lawsuit, Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville and the doctor who performed the weight loss surgery acted negligently by delaying the patient’s diagnosis and treatment.  The patient experienced complications after the surgery and was not provided proper follow-up treatment.  The plaintiff argued that the defendants’ negligence led him to be confined to a wheelchair and lose his vision and hearing.

The jury awarded the patient $168 million in compensatory damages and $10 million in punitive damages.  They also found the defendants guilty of fraud for misrepresenting the surgeon’s qualifications to perform gastric bypass surgery.

This weekend, 23-year old Laura Kaeppeler of Kenosha was named Miss America.  Kaeppeler is only the second pageant contestant from Wisconsin to win the competition and take the title of Miss America.

Kaeppeler attended St. Joseph High School in Kenosha, and continued on to Carthage College, where she majored in music.  For the talent portion of the competition, Kaeppeler performed an operatic piece called “Il Bacio.”

With being crowned Miss America, Kaeppeler also wins $50,000, which she hopes to use to go to law school after she serves as Miss America.  As Miss America, Kaeppeler says she hopes to make a difference for children whose parents have been incarcerated.

In addition to 603,000 vehicles Honda recalled last year for defective airbag deployment systems, 273,000 more vehicles are included in the recall.

Honda recently announced the addition of thousands of more Honda Civics, Accords, Acuras, Pilots, Odysseys, and CRVs.  Owners of the recalled models should have been notified by Honda about a potential airbag defect.

The vehicle manufacturer issued the initial recall after receiving complaints that pieces of metal are sent flying into the air when the vehicles’ airbags deploy.  The airbag defect has resulted in the death of at least 1 person and injuries of 12.

Honda advised used car dealerships selling their vehicles to stop selling them until air bag defects are repaired.

Last week a San Diego Superior Court jury awarded a man $7.5 million in his slip and fall case against Starbucks Coffee Co.

Starbucks was found negligent in the maintenance of its property when a southern California man slipped on the wet floor in the coffee shop. Complications from a head injury he sustained in the fall has prevented him from returning to work as a chiropractor since the accident occurred in 2008.

The verdict will compensate the man for his lost income, loss of enjoyment of life, and medical expenses while his wife will receive $1 million for loss of consortium.
