Posted on Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012 at 5:59 pm

A 32-year-old woman from Florida recently filed two lawsuits against her mother over a car accident in February of last year that occurred when her mom was behind the wheel. The plaintiff’s 1-year-old son was killed in the accident, and she and her 8-year-old daughter were injured.

The 57-year-old defendant, the victim’s grandmother, was driving with her children and grandchildren on U.S. Highway 169 when her vehicle crossed into opposing traffic and crashed into a vehicle head-on. The driver of the vehicle that was hit was killed in the accident, and a passenger was injured. Police reports indicate that the roads were icy at the time of the accident.

The defendant’s daughter filed a wrongful death suit against her mother on behalf of her son, seeking $100,000 in damages. In addition, she filed a separate personal injury lawsuit on behalf of her daughter, seeking $9,839 in compensation for medical bills.

20 injured when floor collapses at casino construction site

Posted on Tuesday, February 14th, 2012 at 5:21 pm

20 construction workers were recently injured in an accident at a casino construction site in Cincinnati. The accident occurred when a metal beam fell, causing a 60-foot by 60-foot area of second-floor flooring to collapse.

Several construction workers were standing on the second-floor area, filling it with concrete. One corner of the flooring dropped, creating a slide that the workers fell down to the first floor. Workers elsewhere at the site witnessed the accident and called 9-1-1.

Some of the workers suffered only minor injuries and received treatment at the construction site. However, at least 14 construction workers were taken to the hospital for treatment of various non-life-threatening injuries. U.S. Occupational Safety and Health investigators are looking into the cause of the construction accident.

When the vehicle rolled over, the driver was ejected.  Paramedics took the woman to Aurora Bay Medical Center in Green Bay for treatment of unspecified, serious injuries.  A passenger in the vehicle suffered less serious injuries.  Two other people in the rollover accident were not injured.

Pfizer birth control recalled, risk of unintended pregnancy

Posted on Wednesday, February 1st, 2012 at 5:44 pm

Pfizer Inc. issued a recall of 1 million packages of birth control yesterday.  The affected brands of Pfizer oral contraceptives are Lo/Ovral-28 and generic Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradoil.

The 28-pill packs of birth control were recalled due to an error in packaging.  Pfizer and U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials reported that the recalled drugs could have the incorrect amounts of active hormone and inactive sugar pills.

The recalled drugs are supposed to have 7 days of sugar pills and 21 days of hormone pills.  When taken in the correct order and at the same time every day, these drugs are intended to prevent pregnancy.

Pfizer said that taking the recalled birth control pills could put women at greater risk of unintended pregnancy.  Women taking these brands of birth control pills are advised to use a non-hormonal contraceptive as soon as possible.
