McFarland police officer dies in Dane County collision

Posted under Car Accidents

A procession was held on Tuesday, November 24 for 33-year-old McFarland Police Department Officer and Janesville, Wisconsin resident Ryan Copeland after he died in two-vehicular collision involving a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources vehicle on Monday, November 23 at around 12:00 p.m. on Highway N near Bublitz Road, located about 3 miles north of Edgerton in the town of Albion.

Police officers from the department led the vehicle which carried Copeland’s body from Madison through McFarland all the way to Janesville, where their procession ended at a funeral home.

According to Dane County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Elise Schaffer, a Ford F250 pickup registered to the DNR and driven by 25-year-old Fitchburg resident Colleen Sutheimer crossed the center line on the highway and crashed head-on with Officer Copeland’s squad car.

Copeland had been with the McFarland Police Department since 2013, when he started working as a K-9 officer in October. Authorities say he had just begun his shift on the day the accident occurred.
