Teen awarded $499,000 for injuries suffered in car accident
Posted on Wednesday, September 28th, 2011 at 7:45 am
A Wisconsin judge recently awarded a 17-year old boy from Prescott $499,000 as compensation for the serious injuries he suffered in a car accident 2 years ago. According to the car accident lawsuit, the medical expenses related to the boy's injuries were over $500,000.
The accident occurred on October 24, 2009 at around 11:30 a.m in Pierce County when a vehicle drove through a stop sign at the intersection of Highway 10 and CTH QQ. The vehicle that the teen was riding in was hit by the vehicle that ran the stop sign. The teen suffered unspecified, serious injuries.
The settlement between the parties involved in the lawsuit was reported to be a partial settlement. The 17-year old's lawyers will attempt to recover about $500,000 of additional liability coverage due to evidence that excessive speed and failure to look out contributed to the seriousness of the car accident.

Honda recalls 310,733 SUVs for seat belt defects
Posted on Wednesday, September 14th, 2011 at 7:48 am
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Honda has recalled 310,773 Pilot SUVs manufactured between 2009 and 2011 due to a seat belt defect.
A statement from Honda says that they have received no reports of injuries or deaths caused by the seat belt defect. In the affected vehicles, stitching used to hold the front lap belts together could be incomplete or completely missing. The defect can cause a seat belt to split, possibly resulting in serious injury to drivers or passengers in the event of an accident.
Honda dealers say that they will inspect the recalled vehicles to see if there is a seat belt defect and replace seat belts in any vehicles that do. A statement from the car dealer reads, "the only way to conretely determine whether the seat belts in an affected vehicle were properly completed is through a specific inspection process conducted by an authorized dealer."

FAA says pilots have lost the ability to fly
Posted on Wednesday, August 31st, 2011 at 5:33 am
This week, the Federal Aviation Administration announced their findings in a study into pilots and automated flight systems. According to the study, the increased use of automation in flights has caused pilots to lose the ability to manually operate planes.
"We're seeing a new breed of accident with these state-of-the art planes. We're forgetting how to fly," said a co-chair of the FAA committee on pilot training. Officials say that one major problem is that pilots have significantly fewer opportunities to train in and practice manual operation.
The FAA looked at data on 46 plane crashes and 900 flights in the study. In 60 percent of the airplane accidents they analyzed, crashes were caused by pilot error and pilots' inability to manually operate the plane.

Study finds chest pain severity is not a heart attack indicator
Posted on Tuesday, August 16th, 2011 at 1:49 am
A study recently published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine says that chest pain severity is not an indicator of a heart attack. Additionally, the study concludes that duration of chest pain is not an indicator of heart attack.
3,300 patients who came to the Hosptial at the Univeristy of Pennsylvania with chest pain were analyzed for 30 days from their arrival. Researchers discovered that the patients experiencing worse or long-lasting chest pain were not more likely to be experiencing a heart attack or to experience a heart attack over the next 30 days than patients with less severe or less-lasting pain.
Pain from a heart attack can also be located in the arms, back, abdomen, and jaw. Heart attacks are commonly misdiagnosed with about 30 percent of medical malpractice payments being paid to people who had wrongly diagnosed heart attacks.

36 million pounds of ground turkey recalled for salmonella contamination
Posted on Wednesday, August 10th, 2011 at 9:31 am
Last week, approximately 36 million pounds of ground turkey were recalled in the U.S. for possible salmonella contamination. The recall was issued by Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation and includes several of their ground turkey products.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service, the ground turkey may have a multi-drug resitant strain of salmonella. Reports indicate that federal investigators were aware of the contamination at Cargill for at least a year before they recommended the recall.
80 cases of illness caused by the ground turkey were reported to the food manufacturer. In addition, one death has been linked to the recalled products.
The ground turkey recall is the third-largest recall involving a meat product in the history of the United States.

Experts say MN man was subjected to unnecessary biopsy
Posted on Friday, August 5th, 2011 at 7:01 am
Two neurology experts are aiding in the medical malpractice case filed by a Minnesota man who developed serious cerebral dysfunction after having an unnecessary biopsy. Both neurologists agree that the doctors at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth should have realized that the man was not in an emergency situation and waited to perform tests instead of the biospy.
The man went to the hospital in February 2006 with numbness in his left arm — a symptom of stroke. A doctor that examined him at the hospital misinterpreted the now 79-year old man's symptoms as a possible brain tumor and decided to take a brain biopsy two days after the patient's admittance.
As a result of the biopsy, the man suffers brain injury, cerebral disfunction, cognitive defects, loss of the ability to walk, and speech impairment. One of the expert neurologists testified that the man's medical history — which included diabetes, hypertension, and vascular disease — suggest that it is more likely he would suffer a stroke than have a brain tumor.
"It would have been very prudent to basically do nothing except check his heart and his cartoid artery," said one of the experts. Furthermore, they argued that the patient could have stayed in the hospital for up to 7 days for testing.
