Last week, approximately 36 million pounds of ground turkey were recalled in the U.S. for possible salmonella contamination. The recall was issued by Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation and includes several of their ground turkey products.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service, the ground turkey may have a multi-drug resitant strain of salmonella. Reports indicate that federal investigators were aware of the contamination at Cargill for at least a year before they recommended the recall.
80 cases of illness caused by the ground turkey were reported to the food manufacturer. In addition, one death has been linked to the recalled products.
The ground turkey recall is the third-largest recall involving a meat product in the history of the United States.
